We run an HTML site, but the site features a flash application. When a user clicks on a link within the flash application, a new browser window opens with the requested information. Is the fact that a new browser opens when a user clicks from the flash app going to hurt my ranking?

Thanks!

Flash is pretty much invisible to the SE's. I've seen instances where Google has followed links from Flash getURL functions but as per indexing and ranking the copy in the flash I haven't seen it yet.

I got into seo because I was a flash actionscripter and couldn't get my sites to rank lol. Flash is still my passion but realistically I can't use it and seo at the same time unless I just use flash for elements like a graphic or a header with the rest of the page as html.

There are ways around it but it deals with ipdelivery of pages to bots and users. It takes you into that dark zone of seo where you have to break a few rules and take higher risks to get your site to perform. The only other way is to make an html site using html text that mirrors the flash application graphically. (if it can be done)

Interesting! That's exactly how *I* got into SEO, as well.

If the search engines really wanted to discourage people from becoming professional SE manipulators (errr...I mean "optimizers"...), they'd probably be well served by treating Flash developers with a little more love.... ;)

On the flip side, unlike many SEO's, I've spent extra time and research into Flash SEO techniques - which has so far served me well. I love my Flash and refuse to give up on it.

the entire site is not flash, but a flash application is a featured component of the site.

Take the following 2 examples of site actions:

1. User clicks on link in flash app, HTML page opens in a new browser window

2. User clicks on link in flash app, HTML page opens in the same browser window as the flash app

From an SEO standpoint, are either of the above executions preferable? Another way to phrase it would be 'Do links which open up a new browser hurt a site's ranking?'

No, if you are linking to a flash app or even loading it up on top of the current page it shouldn't hurt you at all. Pages will rank individually. You flash page may not rank, but the page that you click from to get to it can rank if it's html. You can optimize for your terms on that page all day long. ;)
