View Full Version : What would you be doing without the web?

I have my degree in psychology and business and all I can say is. “Thank God for the web!” I have been a software developer (web-side technologies) for about 5 years now and before that I was teaching different computer classes. I can’t imagine what I would be doing other than developing.

So that’s the question, what would you be doing if there was no web?

I would likely have ended up being a history or ecology professor someplace…

Originally wanted to work with video games (OK, OK wanted to sit all day and play video games...) so would probably be doing that. Possibly in some marketing related function given that's where my education lies, but who knows?

Thank God for SEO - better than any video game out there! ;)

Can't even imagine and don't want to think about it! Just being away from the net sends me into fits of withdrawals.

Great question though. Seriouly, I would probably still be in sales which was my career, pre-Internet marketing.

I would have started some other business doing some other thing, but what, I don't know.

I would be communicating a lot less with my family (email is great!)

I'd be reading more magazines (news and entertainment).

I'd probably be outside a lot more.

Shoot I barely know what I'm doing with the web, much less what I'd be doing without it!

Let's take a shot though... My degree is in Marketing and e-Business, so I guess with no web I might well lose the second half of that degree. I graduated just over two years ago, so I would have likely taken some entry-level sales or marketing position.

This would likely mean I A) wouldn't have my own business, B) would be making considerably less as a young professional in a field not as starving for supply as SEO.

I'd also probably be working alot less, as my current situation has given me alot of great opportunities. I have a problem saying "no", and have thus taken on a bit more than I can chew. So I guess without the web I'd likely be working alot less and making alot less.

SEO has been great for me in that its enabled me to skip the whole entry-level job market and allowed me to conservatively start my own business and do something I really enjoy. Without the web my longer-term career goals would be as a general marketing consultant for start-up firms. I love planning and marketing new ventures, so that's sorta still my plan anyways :)

It's an interesting question, and I don't have a ready answer. Before the web I was a pro singer, and I could still be doing that, but the chances are that I would have changed anyway a long time before now - because that's what I always do. But what to? I've no idea.

The question made me think about no web. I've had very few days away from it since I started and it would be nice to get away from it all for a while. I would feel cut off from the world, which is why it would be nice. Maybe I should start having holidays every year like other people do.

I'd probably either be suing people for a living, defending criminals, or throwing people in jail. Worse, I might be doing divorce or real estate law  I'd rather work with serial killers than people who are getting a divorce - the serial killers are often much more reasonable and polite...

All in all - I'd much rather be playing...errr...working on my computer for a living. I get to meet people from all over the world (online and at conferences), and *most* of them are not criminals....

Under section 494 sub 4 of the Criminal Code of Canada, I hereby place you under citizens arrest. Under this section, you have the right to be placed in the custody of the police at the earliest possible moment.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms further grants that:

You have the right to retain and instruct counsel without delay.

You have the right to be promptly informed of the reasons for your arrest.

You have the validity of the detention determined by way of habeas corpus and to be released if the detention is not lawful.

Now shut up and sit still until the Mounties arrive....

Probably buying and selling of investment properties, something of which I am already doing on a beginning scale but if there was no web, I would be much more involved in it.

I like St0n3y's response:

I would have started some other business doing some other thing ....

At 30 I reached an age where I no longer wanted to work for someone else so I would have started some kind of business whether that be buying real estate as an investment or something else.

Ha, I'm 24 and I feel like I had reached that same "no longer wanted to work for someone else" stage before I really even got out of school! I'm too young to feel this old...

24??? Man, you were old! I was 18 when I was first self-employed, and I've been self-employed for almost the rest of my working life.

I'm 24 now. Didn't say I haven't been self-employed previously. I think my first official venture was in one of those lovely college student painting companies when I was 18. Also had brief stints selling insurance and a few other things while working PT in college. I started my current business a little over two years ago, so age 22. I'm already looking forward to retirement!
