If you use blogging technology on your site, you might want to submit your RSS feed into the appropriate category. When you look around the directory you will notice "XML" listings below the regular listings - these are the links to RSS feeds.

great tip.
I think in a lot of categories, they've also created a subcategories for Blogs in general as well.

You can start here:

I glanced around through some of the directories and you will see them at the bottom of the pages. More properly, they are referred to as XML Feeds for they are accepting not only RSS, but Atom Feeds as well.
In contrast, Google Directory does not seem to have these listed seperately. They do have links to XML and RDF formats in their Directory though, but they are spread out all over the place in such areas as the News > Breaking News category. Do a search for XML Feeds (http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&c2coff=1&q=xml+feeds&btnG=Search&cat=gwd%2FTop) in the Google Directory.
Since Google has them mixed in with regular html pages in the directory, it is difficult to distinguish between the two. An XML feed can have a variety of methods to provide the feed, and it is not unusual for them not to end in with an .xml or .rdf extension.

If the feeds validate at http://feeds.archive.org/validator/ then they should be listable.

If a site has a main listing for www.example.com, and the also have a topical feed, e.g., Widget Industry Headlines at www.example.com/news/index.rdf, is it appropriate to leave the main listing and add the feed as well?

The way you write the question, you sound like you're an editor. Are you?
If you mean, "Can the RSS link be in the same category as the site itself?" then I'll say, "I _think_ so, if I'm understanding your question correctly." There are examples of this sprinkled around the directory.

KCT, I edit a tiny category but I'm more interested in general and as a submitter to other categories. Logically, a headline feed from a site would most often fall into the same category as the site itself, but normally an editor wouldn't put two listings for a site in the same category. I wouldn't want an editor to nuke the primary site listing if he/she saw a feed listing submittal.

Yes, those two links are/were mirrors, and both worked at the time I wrote that post.
There have been internal editor arguments that ODP is "double listing" in a category when an RSS feed is put in with its main site, but the content is different, in a way. So, it's allowed in most cases.
