Was surfing along and a Google AdSense ad caught my eye (picture of which is here (http://www.userdriven.com/2005/05/new_userdriven_.html) ).

Notice the first ad unit ("Change to ads about:")

On the actual ad, when you click a link in that ad unit it changes which ads are displayed within the existing ad unit format - and the text box allows you to further specify to Google what type of ads you want to see displayed.

Is this something new or have I just not been paying attention? Is anyone else seeing these anywhere?

This is not new, it has been around since Jan. 25 (http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/001433.html).

Looks like Google is testing this more actively. I have started to find other recent reports, such as at http://sem.weblogsinc.com/entry/1234000510044796

This began beta testing last October. They have been testing it more prominently since last week, so chances are likely you will run across one or more of these types of combination ad units.

Some sites are just late to the news.

We know that Google had been playing with this some time ago, but the consensus was, and I agree, that many users were not going to take the time to serve themselves ads.

Is there something different about this push?

Even if a majority of users are not changing the ads, Google could gather data from those that do and improve ad serving. The problem I see with this is that the sample would be of people who were willing to take the time to change the ads, certainly not a representative sampling.

But if I had to guess I would say these are more spot tests of ad relevancy then a change in the way Google is going to serve ads.

Has anyone seen Yahoo try anything similar?

Ad Links are working quite well for many publishers, and that is the basis behind the keyword links on the combination units. So surfers are definitely using them to serve themselves ads.

As for Yahoo, their YPN product (set to be the AdSense competitor) is still limited to employee testing at this time.
