There's an interesting story from eWeek today about the Yahoo! toolbar anti-spyware feature, noting that by default "Yahoo's Anti-Spy beta for its browser toolbar doesn't include adware by default when it scans users' systems for unwanted programs". To detect adware, the option must be checked each time.

The article notes that Yahoo! has a business partnership with Claria/Gator.

To be fair to Yahoo!, I found this story on Yahoo's own news feed.

Full story is here: Yahoo Gives Adware a Second Chance (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1738&e=3&u=/zd/20040601/tc_zd/128565)

I think this says it all:
"In its spyware-fighting tool released in beta last week, Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news) left out for automatic detection a category of often-unwanted software for which its paid search division has a financial stake. "

PestPatrol includes Adware by default, Yahoo decided not to include it by default.

With the junk that Y! downloads with messenger and the fact that they are in bed with Gator, it will be a cold day in Phoenix when I download their scumware. With the way Gator embeds an auto-reinstaller, these people should be prosecuted for mass privacy violations among about others.
