View Full Version : Are you still using the reputation system?

Just a curious heads up as to whether people are generally using the reputation system?
Seems that the first page of the memberlist especially is prone to little movement - which either suggests that those members are in regular receipt of reputation points, or else that the reputation system is beginning to stagnate a little.
I'm inclined to suspect the second - perhaps something to raise the profile on to get more use from the system??

Just a quick note to say that literally earlier today, I asked the development person for the forums to look at how we might reshape the system into a more public eBay-style system. Hopefully I'll have more details on if and when we can do this to share in a week or so.

I use it about once a week. I only give positive rep points, at least for the past year.

Just used it today over in the " Cloaking, load of BS?" thread. I'll give you three guesses as to whether it was positive or negative rep ;)

Used it a couple of times since I joined and had a few ratings myself which suggests there are a few people at least using the feature.

Disabling the comments/remarks feature while enabling users to vote could be a good idea, in my opinion. I don't buy the idea that someone has to feel compelled to explain or justify how or why he/she voted in a certain manner.
The problem I see with the reputation system as is now is that it is a voting system and as such someone voting in favor or against other(s) should not need to explain the vote to anyone including the person receiving the vote. This opens the door for all sort of unnecessary, futile conversation between parties or for those receiving negative reputation to respond, react or overreact, or for those giving reputation to explain anything. I feel such waste of time replying (even by personal emails) is a pathetic display of egothism.
When was the last time you were compelled or have to explained to your neighbour how did you vote for a candidate? Just remove the damn gizmo.

If it optional then what is the problem. If you care about the rep system, those comments could be useful. If for example I was getting bad feedback it might be nice to know why.
It's a little like being marked down in an exam and the examiner saying "you have been marked down, we wont tell you why, you must guess"
How can it be put right or improved upon if you dont know the good or bad things you are doing.
Cheers
