Pretty unbelievable technology these guys have put together. Podscope is a beta test of audio recognition/indexing technology from a company called TVeyes.

A few weeks ago I submitted a podcast URL for a friend's science radio show. The show's hosts are big scifi fans and so they sometimes talk about cyberpunk author William Gibson.

When you go to Podscope and search 'William Gibson' it returns the listings for the shows that reference him - which is pretty cool, but even more amazing is that Podscope also returns the 5-10 second excerpts that include the mention.

Amazing tech. Won't be long before Google/Yahoo try to aquire these guys or develop something similar.

Other than podscope, there's actually another search engine for audio files.

www.PodZinger.com

PodZinger uses speech to text technology, so you can literally search within the podcast.

When you type in keyword or term, it finds the relevant podcasts and highlights the segment of the audio in which they occurred. By clicking anywhere on the results, the audio will begin to play just where you clicked.

Podcast search is certainly an industry in its infancy. Funny how they seem to have adopted most of the early methods used by websites to get listed before it became so much more complex, such as the use of Titles and Descriptions to essentially "tell it all." There was an excellent session about this topic at SES Chicago, covered here at the seroundtable (http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/002902.html) (note this was blogged and posted almost "live," so forgive any typos).
