I took some time off and have gotten back in the SEO/SEM game and have decided to target the real estate industry (agents, brokers). So far the response has been INCREDIBLE. I'm having to turn agents down for some of the free seminars I'm doing (standing room only).
What I'm wondering is do you most of you go after a general market or have you found a niche that has worked for you?
Thanks,
Tim

looking at google
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=mozclient&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&q=real+estate+seo
there is not really much competition for "real estate seo"
from what I have seen most people do seo, seo + site design, or a certain part of seo (link broker, link builder, copy editor, etc.) vice concentrating on a specific industry.
real estate is obviously a huge oportunity though as a few home sales equate to more than enough profits to pay for an SEO

Absolutely... plus right now I've got my pricing set @ about a wholesale level in order to drum up a solid client base.
The seminars I'm doing right now are free and relatively short (an hour). I think there's enough interest to hold a monthly workshop and charge a fee to attend for the do it yourselfers.
Thanks SEO Book.

if you work by yourself you will eventually want to shift your business model so that larger and larger portions of your income are automated or paid for by many people for the same recycled unit of your time.
i also remeber reading a few times (from various unknown sources of course) that people tend to discount what they can get for free and are often willing to pay for the same information and will enjoy it more after they paid for it - because after they pay they are more inclined to value it. its kinda like that you taste what you want to taste and see what you want to see theory.
my ebook update subscriber list (have to buy the ebook to get on it) is growing faster than my free weekly newsletter list (100% free) so it kinda does a good bit of confirmation on the theory to practice side for me.
if I were to try seminar type things I would recommend maybe making them free in advance (via some sort of coupon maybe) and pay at the door to see how that works.

yeah, i actually have had a few folks say they would have paid to attend the 1 hour seminar... i really like your idea free in advance and pay @ the door.
thanks,
