I am involved in developing technologies for context based searching. I am trying to find existing engines or test apps to know how effective they have been in addressing the problem. Basically I am trying to find benchmarks for various aspects of context based search if any :) . Any pointers?

Hey there,

can I ask what your project is about and on what scale?

Context based search is still very much in research, so i would advise you read all the papers you can and test all the systems that have been presented to the solution:

PRISM source selection system
SCOOBS project

context research group (www.contextresearch.com/search/context_VSearchForm.cfm)

Indiana.edu (www.cs.indiana.edu/~leake/papers/p-01-02.pdf)

Placing search in context (www.cs.technion.ac.il/~gabr/papers/context_search.pdf )

You assume that the query can be meant in 1 or more contexts, so you add multi-dimensionality to it. You're looking at document classification first of all.

If you are using markup then its fine, if not, there's a whole pile left to do in this area, and you're best starting out with UCREL or something like that.

I think you're best off contacting ACM groups or CLIR or checking out Microsoft or IBM research or something like that if you are developing.

On the commercial side, as well as Adsense and the Yahoo Publisher Network when it is launched, there are Nixxie (http://www.nixxie.com/) , Quigo (http://www.quigo.com/) and TextWise. (http://www.textwise.com/) They may have white papers or demos on their sites which may be of interest.
