I have a client who has been using SiteStats for a while. The numbers that SiteStats is reporting however do not appear to tally with the PPC program and the numbers Google are reporting. The client has now received some external advice that they should use WebTrends. Is WebTrends the better tool? What are the pro/cons? I read that Google actively discourages WebTrends, is there any harm in using WebTrends?

Ok, so nobody has much to say on SiteStats Vs WebTrends.
What about WebTrends on its own. Have people found it to be good at tracking visitors and more specifically, canit report on paid versus organic traffic?

Sorry that I cannot give recent testimony to WebTrends' capabilities, but I'm sure they have what you're looking for. I have used them quite a bit in the past (before PPC) and they certainly were one of the better log analyzers on the market then.

Since no one else has chimed in, I'll also add:

Recently, I've been using ClickTracks for both organic and PPC traffic. If you or your client are not familiar with them already, I encourage you to check them out before buying something else.

They have a PPC vs. Organic report, but lots of other very useful reports as well.

ClickTracks is pretty easy to use; you can get all the usual data and then some with very little effort. However, if you take the time to really pimp it out with some custom "labels" (or filters) you can very quickly get some fantastic looks at immediately actionable data.

Never used Webtrends, but I second ClickTracks.

WebTrends is good software. I have clients who are currently using it. The main down side of WebTrends is that it is too complex for most clients, but it almost has everything you need. Based on my client’s sites that I have tracked with WebTrends, the numbers seem accurate compared to what Overture and Google are showing.
