Telstra to unveil search engine

http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,10047656%255E1702,00.html

From the article, "TELSTRA Corp Ltd is set to unveil plans to revamp its Sensis business with a new, youth-focussed search engine. Sensis – which owns the Yellow and White Pages telephone directory businesses – will announce its new Internet search engine at a briefing for analysts and media next Tuesday."

Unlike the USA for example, here in Australia there is only ONE Yellow Pages - SENSIS. So Sensis effectively has a monopoly on Yellow Pages type information here in Australia.

We are about to see Sensis try to compete directly with the major SE's - and it can effectively block their access to its Yellow pages database.

I find it extraordinary the amount of attention this is getting, unwarranted in my view at the moment. All we have is a Telco company buying up internet properties with the intention of somehow combining them and launching bigtime into the online search market despite have no previous experience in that market. They are moving from print to online publishing and will have steep learning curves.

All the commentary we see is from business analysts who have no direct experience in the search market.

The beta search leaves a lot to be desired. And so on.

When and if they launch it will be interesting to see what they do. I hope I am wrong in my summation, but I'm not holding my breath.

This is not their first attempt either. Anyone remember GoEureka.com.au?

Is this the same crew?
Yup. Go to http://www.goeureka.com.au and you'll see it redirects to Sensis. From memory it was a Pacific Access property - Pacific Access being the prior name of Sensis.
