Installing the google toolbar and visiting a new website will get it indexed in a couple of days?
I read it somewhere :)

Some people believe that, but I think there's possibly another explanation. Just as soon as nameserver info gets put in at the registrar, it seems a certain "referrer" manages to show up and in some way Google then finds out about the site. I've not only seen it myself, others have reported the same thing but without mentioning any specifics.
I have a strong suspicion about where it's from - it's got to be some party/parties with access to registrar info.
Getting into the index and ranking are two different things - though that's probably irrelevant to the question. I will say that some people who would rather stay off the radar not only won't visit sites with the toolbar operating, but don't want it on their computers.

Yup, see http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/001034.html and http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?p=18573#post18573
I think Marcia is alluding to something different. I have it at rumour stage, whois the source of it maybe the clue.

Those are about the Toolbar, RB. I was asking Marcia to explain the DNS thing.

Sorry, I was answering the original question in the thread. I'll quote it to make it easier.

If it is true (and some peoples swear by it) why has it not worked for my new domain name (2 weeks on)?
I have however had domain names show up in google within a day or 2 WITHOUT using the toolbar on it, so why would it index some domain names and not others?

Maybe it needs more time... I don't know, I have no data, myself to prove it.
I'll shoot fantomaster a PM and see if he can shed some light.

In our experience, you can use the Google toolbar with "PageRank display enabled" to notify
Google of your URLs' existence.
We noticed this initially when Google started spidering (or, rather, requesting) admin pages which
weren't linked to internally from anywhere on our site. Neither did they have any external,
incoming links - so the only way Google could have learned of their existence was the toolbar.
Incidentally, this actually qualifies it as a prime "spyware" tool ...
Similar behavior was seen when using the Alexa toolbar which is why we dropped it altogether
from our systems.

When Google gets notified of a URL, this doesn't mean they will bend over to spider and index it
within a few days - this may be a common misconception but it's nothing we can verify from
actual experience.
It's just that the Google toolbar is one more possibility of prodding Google to get going and
actually crawl your pages - nothing more, nothing less.
Whether they will actually spider the URL depends on a range of other factors, e. g.:
- their general crawling schedule
- has the domain been banned for some reason?
- has the IP been banned?
etc.
Let's never forget that Google isn't primarily a search engine company and actually never
was - their core vested interests lie in data mining because that is where the real money is.
Surprisingly, most SEO/SEM artists don't seem to get it though it's so blatantly obvious.
There's so much you can do with/about Google once you've realized this, it's quite amazing.
Always follow the money ...
