hey i was wondering if the title of our site when submitted to search engines would determine what keywords are associated with the site. for example i put the title of my site apples so when people type apples i get more hits even though its not the name of my site. k thanks alot .

Though placing keywords in your title helps - it is not the single solution. You also need some text in the page (though how big this is is open to debate)...
You also need to be selective in the anchor text you use for your internal navigation as well as your inbound links.
Submissions to directories, any other links you get should be thought out for keywords and site theme.

Submitting your site to search engines does little to no good. You need a few links to your site from other sites that are crawled by the SEs.

An attractive title helps. You can add keywords into your title, but pay attention to spamming rules. That means you can't use keyworkds too frequently and repeatedly. (Same to description and keywods parts of meta tag)
You'd better to optimize your web site to be more SE friendly, such as the meta tag, content... And update your web site frequently.
Inbound links can increase your PR as well.

I agree though I was citing driectories which can be a decent source of inbound links as they can be seen as authority.
