Okay the presence of directory lists shows the effectiveness of repeated terms and relevant linking.
But the one that amazes me right now is the method advertisers are using to optimize you for the engines.
Here are two prime examples:
http://www.fxcm.com/currency_forecast/eur-usd.html?engine=worldtimeserver&keyword=textlink+Ed+text+3
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=forex
Look at the first organic result... they have effectively placed themselves at the top of the list and benefit from the clicks.
