blogs are naturally link heavy and people interlink back and forth a good bit with them. also some have viral effects where lots and lots of people may link into them quickly
another benefit is that writing frequent posts gives people an excuse to keep visiting your site over and over

So... do i put these blogs on my sight? or do i go to blog spot make up a little blog and link it to my sight...? are we talking about the same thing? I have been reading that you just find a bunch of keyword rich articles and throw them in a blogspot blog and link it to your sight and get boosted rankings... or is this a bunch of garbage? and is it spamming the se's?

Well, you've got to figure what you're objectives are, and in what way that blogs can be used to achieve it.
Blogs are really just a form of content management software, but with an important caveat - the ability to link to other blogs via comments and trackbacks.
Many webmasters are pretty up on these methods, though, and many active blogs will no allow suspect sites to be linked from.

If you are using blogs primarily for SEO and traffic building there are a number of ways to do it. Search Engines L O V E blogs, and that's why I have a new obsession with blogging. I'll share what I have tried so far.
First I designed an MSN Spaces affiliate blog, since it's easy, just to get the hang of it. It rates #3 -5 for affiliate blogs and similar KW in Google depending on the day. Plus it brings some decent link pop to my other sites that I link to in the blog.
Next I built a page about affiliate blogs and it ranked #1 in Google out of 1.4 million for "affiliate blogs." But that page wasn't even a true blog, had messy HTML, wasn't WC3 and didn't verify. (Note hate to admit it, but could not figure out how to get a REAL blog going on my site, so was cutting and pasting raw HTML daily from another blog, just to get some content going. But HEY I was #1. Someone just leap frogged me though.)
I just paid a top Word Press designer to develop a super clean REAL blog for me, actually a network of affiliate blogs including mine and several other top affiliate marketing blogs that I am sydicating and adding to my site for more KW content. I put them all on a subdomain which should also help rankings. So excited to see how many #1's I can get with this new REAL blog and how much traffic it can pull after everything gets indexed.
Just finished tweaking it out yesterday and added to my site, and all my forum sigs to help G find it. A friend submitted my blog to all the blog directories too. One of the viral benefits to blogs starts kicking in after others find your blog and start syndicating the content on their sites. I am working on some new strategic alliances, so a big boost in traffic right now would sure rock! Fingers crossed!
Hope this gives you some ideas that will help get you started.

5starAffiliatePrograms - can you let us know how it goes and how long it would take you to get results? I am currently looking into the power of blogs as well so it would be very helpful to hear about people's experience.

thanks for the post! to make sure i'm on the same page, are the blogs you've designed actual affiliate blogs where you promote products or are they meta affiliate blogs, ie blogs about affiliate blogs? ;] are you creating actual content and seeing folks linking to you or are you interlinking between blogs you've created?

Well it's going great so far! I'm thrilled. I have multiple #1 - 5 rankings on G, Y and MSN for affiliate blogs and several top 20 rankings for SEO blogs. My 1st 2 weeks I got over 1500 visitors.
I'm getting a t-shirt made that says "I Blog for Traffic!"
risk,
I'm doing a variety of things. I write my own blog about affiliate industry news, affiliate program updates, Google and SEO news and Internet marketing jokes. (All combined in my main blog.)
Then I also suck in and display the top SEO blogs including this one and Threadwatch for my SEO blog. And I have 3 affiliate blogs that I suck in from other people and display. One with industry news, one from affiliatetip and one that sucks in newbie articles and tips.
Today I blogged on my main blog about the new MSN spoof site. If you haven't seen it yet its a hoot and a half to play with and send to friends!
I think the mods here are OK with me posting the URL, since you guys are asking what I did. The MSN spoof is 2 blogs down. Also see my April fools Google blog from April 1st :-)

BTW one of my best tips is to use pingomatic every time you make a new post. :)
