Dear All,
I wonder if you have already discussed the findings of a research done by comScore and sponsored by Overture as I would not like to waste your energy and mine on the topic already covered...
Let me know if the ClickZ article Generic Search Terms Drive Most Buying
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3447431
has been already discussed...
Otherwise I would like to express my opinion about the findings presented in the study and the article...
cheers,

Could you specify what in particular you mean by highest return on SEO investment? ROI?
Additionally it's quite different in case of PPC [Pay Per Click] SEM campaigns I belive.
And in my opinion it would be very difficult [if not almost impossible] to get very high position ethically on generic search terms for SEO [ here I am referring to electronics category in the UK].
How do you find this, huh? ;-)

That is great illustration mike.
There was a study on conversion rates for electronics, I think it was something along the line of 92% of conversion occur in store for electronics. Meaning the web is a great source for research and finding a person that sells it in the area.
Many people think being ranked for a key term will increase sales, but it’s not always the case. (Local search is someting you may want to look into)

Could you be more specific - any links or details to the study?
I partly agree - many people would still search on the Net and buy in the shop.
Though I used to work for a small online retailer of electronics based in London, UK we were able to turn over yearly about £5M of online sales + some xtra in the shop.
Without any brand and reasonable marketing budget - just through comparison shops and recommendations of course.
And at least in the UK online retailing is developing dynamically - last Xmas many Brits preferred to shop gifts online instead of crowded high street shops.

I believe this research

provides much more relevant data and conclusions!
It just proves my own belief that Generic Search Terms DO NOT Drive Sales!
