when I do link:www.xyz.com in Google, I see so many
backward links of its own internal pages i.e
http://www.xyz.com/1.htm
http://www.xyz.com/2.htm
http://www.xyz.com/3.htm
http://www.xyz.com/4.htm
what is the reason behind that....why google shows the web pages of its own website(www.xyz.com) ...Please help me.

Google assigns a "value" to website URLs, according to how they are linked to from other pages on the world wide web.
On the Google Toolbar this "value" is reduced to a logorithm "score" of 0-10.
When you use "link:" to gauge the backlinks for a URL, it will only list those pages pointing to it that have a Google PageRank (PR) of 4 or more.
Thus if a site has a lot of internal pages pointing to such a URL, with a PR of 4 or more, they will show up on the "link:" request.
Therefore the result of "link:" is neither comprehensive, nor does it actually tell you about how well those links to that URL help it rank for specific terms.

Thanx for the reply.
I agree with you but we have 3 webpages of of PR 5 and and 4-5 pages with PR 4 but google is showing only 1 page.
Why is it so.
Thanks

some of the links that do not show up on a backlink check still count.
the best way to describe the google link check feature is either "random" or "broken" or both

are the href tags pointing to the domain.com as opposed to domain.com/ or index.html... I would start with looking at the linking on the site.
Make sure the spiders see the links on the pages (use one of the spidering tools).
