I am currently using Link Popularity Check to view backlinks for a group of sites. I received the following results on a new site:

AllTheWeb: 0
AltaVista: 9
Google/Hotbot: 0
Inktomi/HotBot: 0
MSN Search: 1
Teoma: 1
Yahoo: 0

Given these results, I would like to speculate that AltaVista shows the most accurate number of backlinks. I was wondering what others had to say on the subject?

Here are the commands used:

AllTheWeb: link:www.xyz.com
AltaVista: linkdomain:www.xyz.com
Google/Hotbot: link:www.xyz.com
Inktomi/HotBot: linkdomain:www.xyz.com -domain:www.xyz.com
MSN Search: link:www.xyz.com -domain:www.xyz.com
Teoma: www.xyz.com site:-www.xyz.com
Yahoo: link:http://www.xyz.com

Thanks for your help!

Lately since MSN now has its own database, MSN shows more incoming links. But, its showing the same DMOZ directory listings that are on the other little Directories.

Other than that, Yahoo seems to be pretty spot on for mine.

Try PRSearch.net (http://www.prsearch.net/inbx.php) and MarketLeap (http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/default.htm). These are a couple I like to use to see the differences.

Now, which one I trust the most. Believe it or not, I like Altavista for this. Yahoo! is very good as well, specially for using the linkdomain:______ -site:_____ command.

I like http://www.justintubbs.com/backlinks/ for checking backlinks. It gives 8 results at the same place.

Yahoo always seems to show me many more links than other engines. MSN is pretty good. Google is pretty bad at showing links. I just checked links to my page, to verify my post. Yahoo lists almost 200. MSN about 50. Google has 2. Hmmm. I would say Yahoo is the place to check.
