I would very much appreciate any input on this. I have developed an idea for a unique and novel enhancement to the way search engine advertising is currently done- a way that would be a win for the search engine, the advertiser as well as the user. I would love to work on the idea with a firm that would be able to pitch the idea to Google, Overture, etc. but I haven't a clue as to who to approach? Does anyone have any ideas?
Are there any advertising consulting firms out there that advises Google, etc. on it's advertising offerings, or do they come up with their ad strategies completely in house?
I eagerly anticipate any input.

From my experiences they do post planning inhouse and sometimes consult with big advertisers and agencies to get their feedback etc before bringing something to market.
There aren't in my experiene companies they hire as consultant as the sector is still "young" comapred to thsoe where these sort of advisors exist.
Of course individuals catch their eyes and are hired (full time or contractors).
Is it a PPC-related idea? I have a few contacts...

Google suffer in the extreme of the "if we haven't invented it, it's no good" syndrome. They are VERY hard to convince about anything that wasent done inhouse. I know of many very strong business and people that have tried - and most often failed.
Yahoo!Overture seems, generally, to be a bit more interested and "business minded" but still have a VERY tight filter on any produkt ideas from the outside. I have seen really good ideas and projects being turned down.
Some consultants, uncluding myself, have done work for engines and portals to assist them with specific tasks. However, to be honest, I doubt any of us can be of much help to you. What you need is a REALLY big wallet and a VERY good sales person to convince those guys about your ideas. It does help if you can bring some kind of high profile person (no, not just a high profiled SEO) to the table.
What you have to remember is, that both Google and Overture get a very high number of people and companies approaching them every day with "great" ideas. Now, I am not saying your idea is not outstanding but you have to find some way to make that idea stand out between thousands of others they get in the door every month.
What you probably nee first is an evaluation of your idea and you need more than one person/specialist to do that. If they all tell you they won't buy it then I suggest you move on. It's tuff but it's the real world.
Good luck! :)

I would recommend seeing if one of the smaller engines are interested... but I would get the concept patented so you have some leverage.
