They have added GMail and Google groups as new elements going with all the other tools and directories for images and catalogs etc.
Though it may not be suggested right now, but they are definitely posturing towards a portal eventually... what are they going to spend all the IPO cash on?

I am hoping they come of with gMessenger with text based ads.

So you are chatting with your buddy and Google is reading your chat. lets say your telling your friend that you want to see the upcoming Neil Young concert in Madison Square Garden. Then all of a sudden a Google AdWords ad pops up from ticketmaster.com offering you a ticket to that event. ;)

Can you imagine the uproar over that one, given the stink they have gotten over the ads I get in Gmail... hell I like them and they also offer recent news items... it is handy and actually effective as they have a checkout candy rack type appeal to impulse clicking.

That might be nice, but Google would have a hard time grabbing hold of the IM market, unless Gmail gets millions of users (because if you sign up for gmail, you are signed up for G's usenet groups and a whole bunch of other stuff, that would probably include G's possible IM thing). Even so, most people aren't likely to sign up for two IMs - Yahoo, AOL or ICQ, and then google's possible thing.

not sure about that.

6 months ago, I would have said an email service from Google would NOT work, today i am of a different mind.

I think an IM service would have very very rapid take up

Do you really think Google will go portal?

While I think it does follow the logic, it gets away from their core which is search.

Maybe they do go portal, but it should be secondary to search.

All other considerations are secondary to search... or motivated by search...

I agree. Google has kind of already gone portal with Gmail and Google News, but they both incoroprate search.
