Is there a max no of characters that SEs accept for .html extensions?
Example is http://www.yoursite.com/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.h tml is that acceptable with no dashes?

Strictly speaking the extension is the part after the last . - so for a "normal" web page that would be .html - the "extension" of the file is html
To take that part first, search engines don't care aout your extensions. They do care about the total lenght of your entire URL, but not the extension
I made a few tests some time ago, with totally silly extensions. If you do this search at Google you will find all three (in fact, it's the only three results for this query)
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Test+of+file+name+extensions%22&num=100&hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&safe=off&filter=0
As you see, Google have indexed my test file with a .c64, a .mikkel and even a .google extension :)
Anyway, I think what you are asking is maybe more related to the total lenght of URLs. In my experience the shorter the better. Having said that, you should be able to get URLs indexed with at least a total of 256 characters.
