I think one of the motivating factors for the Search for AdSense feature is a counter to the MSN situation of them adding search to the operating system... Google may offer a desktop solution but if they can roll out search for AdSense in a big way so that ultimately Google search boxes appear on the vast majority of websites they have countered that move in a big way.
Give MSN the PC level... Google will concentrate on the webside as that is where they are strongest.
Also it builds a stronger base of income streams... which also adds to the IPO status.
