I was doing some research on why there is such a large gap between our rankings in MSN and Google and noticed that websites coded in ASP get a major boost in rankings in the MSN Search, especially the beta.

one of our client's websites www.wickeronpark.com is ranked #1 for "outdoor wicker furniture" on MSN Beta yet it doesn't even show up in the first 3 pages in Google. I searched a few more terms and it seems to be a trend. But on the other hand we could still be in the sandbox in Google because the website is only 3 months old. This may be old news to most of you, is this true? ASP sites get a major boost over all other server-side languages? I guess this is part of an ongoing quest for Microsoft to take over the world.

No search engines that I have heard of rank pages by the extensions.

Would it not make sense for Microsoft to do that? Its rewarding websites using ASP, which in return means that the website is running on a Windows Web Server, which in return means that the Web Host has purchased a license from Microsoft. So basically, Microsoft is rewarding websites that are using Windows as a server in effort to get more people to use Windows instead of Linux as a web server. Of course Microsoft would deny it all together but I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to do something like this.

This would violate the most basic of all Search Engine credos - relevancy and would certainly be a nail in MS coffin when it was discovered. I really doubt that MS is going to be indusging in practices which are commercially risky with a new search engine in the works.

I am about as sure as anyone can be that MSN is NOT doing that. It would go against everything they are trying to do. I have talked to some of the MSN engineers and discussed other similar "internal interests" and it was very clear to me that the good people working on the search project do not take internal "bribes" - they are too focused on building a quality search experienced. They know that if they are not 100% focused on making MSN the best search engine they possibly can they are not going to be able to compete.

What you are probablynoticing is that on MSN beta almost everyones site ranks well on MSN beta, while getting good rankings on Google is relatively harder.

Hi Mel.

My site ranks so much better on MSN Beta vs any other engine for the two keyword combination I tried to optimize.

Why is that?
