Have you checked out a similar toolbar offered by Viewpoint? Viewpoint's toolbar offers additional view features that you might enjoy compared to binocular. Viewpoint offers Yahoo search with web, image and multi-media seach capabilities. I would be interested in your opinions on the Viewpoint toolbar - I think you will find the powerful graphics engine interesting.

I like Viewpoint's toolbar, but Ask's is by far the best offering that is "self-contained" in the actual search results (you don't need to download anything). Others have pointed to search engines that use preview technology, but they require an actual click, with Ask Jeeves it's simply a rollover.

Ok, gonna go now, before people start asking if I am on Jim's payroll. ;)

Andy, thanks for the reply. Agreed, no download of toolbar needed for binocular, Viewpoint does require download.

FYI, Viewpoint toolbar does show picture preview of sponsored results. Interesting how ASK does not. In addition, if you have the Viewpoint toolbar and do an ASK search the Viewpoint (yahoo) results show up as well resulting in a double result search (comprehensive seach). Viewpoint includes pop-up blocker, skins, bookmarks, dogears, etc.

Viewpoint had over 1/2 million downloads of the toolbar in just 44 days in beta. Out of beta now and getting good download traffic.

Has anyone else tried Viewpoint?

Hate to be the 'party pooper' but I am going to split this thread out into a different forum. This thread was discussing Ask's enhancements and not Viewpoint's toolbar.

rustybrick, no problem - new forum is fine - appreciate your admin work. However, "beta test" forum name? Viewpoint is out of beta and driving real benefits (and ppc revenue) to its growing user base. Oh well.

FYI, Viewpoint is an advanced graphics business with rich media and video applications used in web advertising market as well as search. The combination of the rich media base, 3D advertising, graphical search and a yahoo search partner make an interesting combination when compared to Ask J.

.

Call it a working title for right now- we'll certainly consider revising it as the forum develops. we just wanted a space for these types of product/service specific discussions, or suspected selfpromotion.

but the forum description is:
Informally announce new search engine technologies or existing search related products, to get honest feedback from forum members.

so hopefully that will help identify what types of discussion are appropriate here, I will also add an announcement thread to this forum to help clarify.

Viewpoint vs Askj Binoculars

Expandable Results Tray
Viewpoint uses an expandable tray for visual search results combined with written headlines for both sponsored and un-sponsored results. The tray eliminates the “back” routine for multiple results selections.

Ask requires the traditional “back” logic (slower search).

Web, Image and Multi-Media Search
Viewpoint offers various search categories.

Ask has web search only in beta version (Viewpoint out of beta).

Sponsored links visually displayed
Viewpoint offers sponsored links to be displayed as well, an added value to the user.

Ask skips binocular capabilities for sponsored links, added ppc revenue for askj not user.

Toolbar vs No Toolbar
Viewpoint requires toolbar download (which does allow additional capabilities like skins and enables future enhancement upgrades automatically).

Ask requires no download which is nice.
