View Full Version : Do I need to submit to search engines?
Hi, I run the pay-per-click search engine marketing campaigns for my company. We were trying to get some "free" traffic by optimizing our site for organic search. We currently display in organic for a few branded key terms in most search engines (google, yahoo, msn, etc.) so I know that the engines are aware of our site.
My question is this... do we need to formally submit our site and/or individual pages or portions of our site to the search engines to increase our exposure. If so, what is the best way to go about this?
Thank you in advance for any help!

Hi PPC, great forum name for this forum. ;)
Anyway, you do not need to submit your site to search engines. What you want to do is make sure to have links to your web sites. Basically, if Google (or any search engine) has page A in the index and then crawls page A, and finds a new page, lets call that page - Page PPC. The search spider will then most likely jump from page A to page PPC and include it in its index.
Then you need to make sure that all the pages on your site are crawlable, meaning, they are linked well.
Hope this makes sense.
The best way to get included in a search engine is through natural linking.
Thanks for the information rustybrick!

Also, bear in mind that there is a huge difference between directories and search engines.
You do not need to submit to neither, but if you submit to directories, that can help your rankings. This is something best done manually (highly recomend you DON"T use automated submission for this). And don't go crazzy submitting to directories, just cover the biggest and mos popular ones.

Try http://www.dmoz.com/...
I think that it this the big one

Yes, I will want to submit our site to DMOZ. Is that the only directory I should submit to or would you recommend other directories as well?
Thanks!

Well, they are a lot of small directories, paid directories (as Yahoo! for $299 annual fee), but I recommend to target your site at specific directories, as local, with a specific products or services as well.
Google, Alta Vista, Lycos, Hotbot, iwon search, AOL uses the DMOZ directory...so, obviously it is a great tool for free.
Do a research in your country if they are some regional Internet directories, they can help you too.
Good look! ;)

You can find a list of the most important directories here: http://www.strongestlinks.com/directories.php
If you have the time you may want to check: http://www.isedb.com/html/Web_Directories/. If you don't have the time, you may be able to get a student to submit your site to many directories for a cheap per hour price. I found that to be a good, cost efective way to get inbound links. HTH
Thank you all very much for the info!
