Obviously the character counts are higher at Overture and you see people taking full advantage of that. Though I do the same, I find that a lot of times when I am going for a fast set up and use less than max characters, I tend to get better CTR.
Granted I usually just put the keyword up, but my longer titles always include the search term also...

Who else finds a slightly better conversion ratio from Overture?

The results you have experienced with shorter Overture ads may, in part, be due to the way Overture ads are displayed at Yahoo & MSN, combined with your choice of bid position.

At Yahoo and MSN, an ad that makes it into the coveted left-hand side of the page will usually allow for the display the full 190 description characters allowed by Overture. However, if the ad appears on the right-hand side of the page, you will find only the first 70 or fewer characters of your finely crafted description being displayed.

Your bid placement, combined with a shorter description may have served to increase the CTR - as your shorter description may have completed its message - while longer-winded ads were cut off in …

Okay, I have noticed that... actually write with the 70 characters in mind (thought it was 80) sometimes... but usually I keep the bid at #1
