If you have a number of backlinks from the same IP address, does this affect the way Google lists your site???

Yes thats what i mean - If i have a main site with about a 100backlinks(all my sites) from the same IP address, will it harm my listings? Or would it improve them?

It will certainly do no harm. I have many thousands of links from my site pointing to mainly the home page. However, I would highly doubt that PR, rank boosting etc is passed for all pages. It is most likely passed from one that has the highest/lowest PR, or perhaps the first one it encounters.

Just look at M$ etc with all their pages and all the links they have to a single page. Having the same link on many pages on your own site is just part of good site design IMO.

Good question reggy, a lot of people are wondering the same thing. For this very reason, a lot of people are taking hosting with different hosts with different IP numbers, to avoid discrediting backlinks, whether they're relevant and/or legitimate or not.

Yes cross linking can get you in trouble, unless the sites are somehow related.

I believe when the big PR0 sweep hit, sites were hit for cross-linking whether they were on topic or not - although some say there never was any cross-linking penalty at all, that it was something else entirely.

what site gets penalized - the one being linked to or the one sending the link?

I believe you will find it always the 'from' page/site. This is based on that Google state, there is vitually nothing a competitor can do to harm anothers ranking.

Would building some sites on free hosts be a cheap solution for getting backlinks from different IP addresses???

Unless the pages you link from has PR (other links to them) there is no point. If you are going to obtain links to a free site hosted on a free server, you are better off cutting out the middle man and getting links direct to your main site.

You should be look at getting links from/to sites that would be of interest to your site visitors. Don't fall into the trap of only trying to obtain link from high PR link pages. Ignore the PR (unless grey bar) as what you see maybe totally different in a few months time. Never link to link farms, these are sites that have pages of links that having nothing to do with their site.

Also focus on trying to get, those that link to you, to use some good keyword anchor text. For example, if you were selling Red Apples a good title for the link would be "Green Bananas" (nah just kidding) it would be "Red Apples".
