Hi InChina,
happy to give you some infos in regard to German search engines. Apart from international SEs in Germany like Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Lycos there are a lot of national and local SEs. The University of Konstanz provides an overview of German national and local SEs als well as SEs in Austria and the German speaking part of Switzerland.

yes there are lots of local SE´s, but in both countries the first four are so dominant that you will probable make best use of your time starting with these:
Germany:
T-online
Google.de
yahoo.de
msn.de
France
google.fr
yahoo.fr
msn.fr
voila.fr
The moment I see altavista o alltheweb listed as relevant players in the search engine market, I tend to become quite skeptical. There market size has shrivelled to sizes that make ROI a basic factor to no waste time on them.
my 2 cents of a euro worth.

Hi Patrick,Agreed the 4 most important se in France do represent more than 92% of traffic generated (Oct. 2004) but Altavista still is the 7th most important se, and atw 10th..
For me the question "Just any regional or local se at france" didn't mean which se are important enough to deserve our attention..
Vive la différence :D

Hi Webcertain,
yes of course you are correct, but i cannot help myself, altavista (it was my first SE as a user a long time ago) and alltheweb (was a great SE until bought out).
:p

InChina - Patrick is right about focussing on the top four, of course, but you asked what were the engines in France and Germany.
In reality, and I think Patrick and Johann would agree with this, if you're starting a multi-language multi-country campaign, you do need to start with Google because of its shear dominance.
However, the smaller engines can be especially useful if you're targeting a really competitive sector eg 'ski' where by spreading your effort you've more chance of success.
It all depends on your objectives?
Meanwhile, we'd be interested to hear how things are in China - in China? What difference has Google's acquisition made of Baidu, for instance? :)
