I do not know which Algorithm you are talking about as Google changed lots of things.

the Panda update has yet to filter through all results - but if you did article submissions for links you could notice a slight drop

Google seems lately to be in one of those nightmares where everything you fix breaks something else. That's a classic problem with AI recognition algorithms; you get to some level of performance, but then every change makes something worse. This is an indication that either you've come to the end of the approach you're using, or you're too close to the noise threshold and there is no better solution.

This problem is well known in program trading. If you over-analyze old data, you find yourself tracking noise as if it were information. That won't help predict the future.

The other problem well known to program traders is that if you find something that gives you an edge, soon others will have it too, and your strategy will stop working. "Efficient market theory" claims this is normal and inevitable. Google is in that situation, as SEOs try to find out what Google likes and doesn't like, optimizing their sites accordingly.

The more subtle the "signals" being used by Google, the easier they are to tweak. Recently, there's been the comment that Google now favors correct English grammar. If that's real, they have to be evaluating that automatically, so it's probably sufficient to tell your content farm staff that all content must pass Microsoft Word's spelling and grammar checker.

I think we're headed for a year of frantic churn, as Google tries to develop a machine-checkable definition of "good content" and SEOs work on making content to fit that definition.

@staceymattew Good to hear, the recent update seems like it would have helped some smaller sites with good content...

Aussie, that is counter to what the Internet is about, IMO. It is like limiting the cable TV channels. Hey, if you can't get on the cable TV, then no one will ever see you. I don't mind a whitelist, as long as I am on it - otherwise, forgetaboutit.

From one of the articles you linked to Aussie:

The rich are getting richer, thanks to Google's Panda Update. The Online Publishers Association, boasting members such as ESPN, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times, estimates that Google's latest algorithm change has shifted $1 billion in annual revenue to larger web properties

I bet they were on the White List.
