View Full Version : QS On Exact Match

During a training seesion of an outsourced support service, the service concerned were recently told by their Google tariner that the QS is calculated on exact match only. Sooooo, let's supposing I bid on a broadmatch on, say, bicycle and then include [bicycle] as a negative keyword, would I get a 10/10 QS?

Sounds too simple, but may give it a whirl to find out.

since the QS is done at keyword level inside ad groups it makes sense it is done at exact match and only trhough the terms in google search

Actually, Quality Score is based on "precise match." Regardless of the match type you've chosen for your keywords, Google assigns quality score on how closely your KW matches the actual search query. Brad Geddes has a great explanation on his bgtheory (http://www.bgtheory.com/blog/quality-score-is-based-on-precise-match-not-exact-match/) blog. Hope that helps!

Thanks Mel,

But that is, in fact, what I meant (having just read the article by Brad Geddes). So my point was that if taking, as in Brad's example, the keyphrase Google Adwords on a broadmatch and then including [Google Adwords] as a negative keyphrase in that adgroup there would be no impressions on the exact (or precise) match for Google to calculate a poor QS on the CTR. Which, in my inquistive little mind, is making me wonder how this would affect the broadmatched terms.

Is this conference in Chicago any good? Fed up with Webmaster World in Vegas, done it for previous 4 years.

Thanks for clarifying. I'm not sure, but what I think would happen in this case is that your QS would drop on your broad match terms, since you're negative-ing out the precise match. Maybe AWR can chime in on this?

I assume you're referring to SES. Yes, it's very good. I've been going since 2004 and I highly recommend it. Informative sessions, great speakers and really great networking.
