for e.g. website - www.abc.com

its xml sitemap address - www.abc.com/sitemap.xml

is it mandatory to place www.abc.com/sitemap.xml on www.abc.com or placing the XML sitemap code in the public folder is enough

Having sitemap XML file in root folder is a good practice.

Jag - yes, XML file has been placed in root folder. Now, is it compulsory to add XML sitemap on website for e.g., www.abc.com/sitemap.xml

Not mandatory, if you configure to Google webmaster it is well and good.
