Please could someone give me a very simple explanation of what a blog is & how to start one? What are its advantages/disadvantages if any?
Thank You!

It is a "Personal Weblog".

Many examples and you most likely visit them daily and don't even know it. You can get them for free at blogger.com and other suppliers, or download the software and install your own on your server.

My Loving Each Other More: Search Engines & Blogs (http://searchenginewatch.com/sereport/article.php/2175261) article from last year gives you my definition of them plus links to a variety of background resources.
In short, blogs are like online journals, where people post information on topics that interest them on some type of periodic basis. Someone might post once a day, once a week or several times per day. Whatever the frequency, blogs especially stand out in that you tend to view them chronologically -- the newest stuff is promoted on the home page, and you can dig back.
In contrast, non-blog web site tend to have a non-chronological structure. Instead, top articles, sections, features, products etc are featured on the home page with no attempt to just reward the freshest material.
As Anthony points out, getting started is pretty easy given the number of free resources offering these. It's sort of like in the late 90s, when many people offered the ability to have "free home pages." Blogs are a more sophisticated form of this for many, a way to express yourself online even if you don't know how to do HTML.
