Just read an interesting article from CNN reporting on Facebook users (http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/personal/04/04/facebook.love/index.html) and their relationship status.
These are mainly college-aged individuals, but collectively represent the general user behavior of Facebook users.
According to the article, FB users DO treat relationship status as legitimate. In other words, social interaction is legitimized on Facebook. By their own admission, they are not afraid to display themselves out in the open. They use FB to interact, to keep in touch with people they would otherwise NOT have time to keep in touch with.
There is tremendous insight into user behavior on social platforms and their media consumption behavior.
