For the best current book on using Google search on an advanced level it is hard to pass up, Google Hacks. I grabbed a copy a year or ago just because of the title and kept reading after discovering it was not some gold mine of backdoor ways to Google... it is a well documented text about doing advanced search, which comes in handy when scoping the competition and your own successes.

FYI We just bought "How to do Everything with Google." It's not a bad read but Google Hacks has more info.
Conversely, it does get into other areas, such as Google News and Froogle, but less on advanced search operators like Google Hacks.
So if you are new to Google, it's not a bad buy, but if you are experienced with Google I wouldn't recommend it.
