Hi,

One of our clients keeps getting approached by a company trying to sell them a new intelligent digital marketing tool. The company in question is called Webforensics (.co.uk is their site).

Among the claims made is that it lets you see the actual details of companies that have visited your website (incl. names and phone numbers). It says it can do that by placing a unique bit of code on a site in order to track visitors and capture all of their company information which is then pulled into reports for the site owner/webmaster to use. It claims to be able to provide visitors web addresses, the town from where your site was accessed from as well as office telephone numbers.

I'm sure there are a number of visitor analytics programmes that can do wonderful things to help a webmaster figure out what is happening on his site but company information and office numbers just from accessing a site? I find this hard to believe.

After all how could any such a programme determine exactly who you are and whether you're accessing a site from your home, office, laptop in a wireless zone or even internet cafe?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

the phone number is a little tricky - I would ask for a demonstration and ask specifically how they get the number. Location is easy and if they are surfing from a registered IP maybe more
