To Quote Danny concerning doorways:
"the pages may be so similar to each other that they are considered duplicates and automatically excluded by the search engine from its listings."
Does this apply to Google?
Does doing this risk getting your home page excluded as well?
Does writing in invisible scriprt run the risk of getting excluded.
Does anyone know how to access a rival's statistics?

rival statistics = hitwise
stuff can usually be pretty similar without flagging a duplicate content filter. one of the newer patents google got for it though allows them to disclude sites from search results using similarites in snippets.
duplicate pages are not always removed from the search engine index. often times the lower ranking of the two simply will not show up in the search results.
some things they can look for are filename filepath filesize incoming links and outgoing links...

Hi seobook and thanks for that info.
Say hypothetically my site sold flowers from Holland
I included in the title bar on the the home page flowers for sale Holand. Then I duplicated it several times and changed the titles to flowers for sale Amsterdam, Roses for sale Holland etc. Each page the exact same apart from the title. The first page was abc.com, second page abc.com/index2.htm etc
Would my original home page be penalized for that?
I could make other pages with different formats even different content and not be caught.
Also does it do anygood or is it the same thing to have a duplicate page say abc.org or abc.net and have the content made up of links?
Thank you in anticipation

That comes up quite a bit for other sites, like limos services, hotel chains, etc.
I think you might want to include some onpage content that may have some relationship to the city/state/region that you are targeting. Simple things like an address (if there are shops for the flowers), maybe a couple of landmarks could be mentioned that are heavily flowered (local arboreteum or park), etc.
You basicly would want to do this anyway if you want the get found for a local area or region. Using local "markings" will drive that home. Don't be afraid to link out off of this page to something like a local agency (chambers of commerce, in the US are good). The link will help identify your region easier.

Hi I'm considering buying a number of domain registrations from http://www.networksolutions.com
all variations on my own site to create doorways. Each cost $34.99 per year and an additional $15 per website. I'm not sure what that means. Is it necessary to purchase the web sites. What I want to do us to put existing web pages on my site on to a different domain name so they can be independent sites to double my presence and act as doorways.
Any responses will be appreciated.
Thanks

The search engines are a little smarter than I think you're giving them credit. They can pick duplicate, like, similar content a mile away. The pages may show up initially, but will soon vanish into nothing. People try and do the same thing with page file names. The content must differ to be effective.

Hi Jampers,
Shop around. You can find a much better price. I have been paying $8 for one year and for multiple years less. There is Go Daddy and many more that are less expensive than NWS.
