What is the best way to find out who is linking to my site? And is there a way to find out when a site's link is going to appear as paid to google. For example i have found that many sites have a recip link form for viewers to fill out. How can i find out if those are going to be worth anything to google.

apart from a lot of tools that are out there such as those at seomoz, seobook etc. you can always do a site link search at Yahoo for the best summary

I don't think that works anymore. I always get results from my own domain. I've tried with and without 'www'.

Sometimes best means easiest, which would be Yahoo as mentioned.

For most accurate, use WMT account and add results from Yahoo, MSN and ASK. After you remove the duplicates this is probably the most complete picture you could get.

Sleung: Google link: command is totally broken, at Google you really must use your WMT account for this and even then it won't be complete.

I like to do it old school!
"www.thesite.com" and/or "thesite" and/or "thesite.com"

This lists everything google (or any SE you check on) finds linked or otherwise! What is neat is you often can find links that you'll want to contact the webmaster for a full link. It picks up any smack being laid on you by the lame brains and malcontents out there (who often don't link to hide the smack). It picks up the links and "mentions", which mentions, it has been rumored for years that google may count these as links/citations for PR. All in all the link checks are not very useful from an intelligence standpoint. Sure ut tells you the PR or who's linking to a site but that and $2 gets you a coffee! The coffee being the only tangible benefit.

You could check analytics for referring sites, that might provide some information if your not finding what you're looking for via other methods.... Just an idea

Beu - that's a really important point. It's important from your analytics to know who is sending you regular traffic, and maybe you can pay a premium to have more branding on your top referrers.

For instance, most sites get the majority of their traffic from Google. So what do we all do? We pay for premium PPC ads on Google.

So if sitex.com is sending you most of your traffic (after the Search Engines), you might choose a premium package on sitex's site. Or you could help sitex write a case study and have premium branding at a lower or even free cost.

Try a backlinks tool. Many are free and list a whole lot of info. Yahoo is probably the best one.
