Has anybody seen a definite improvement in their rankings as a result of adding titles to their links and to tables?

I'm in two minds: do they increase keyword density and so help, or are they dangerous as the engines may see them as spam?

I'm talking about using them sensibly and not "stuffing" them with keywords.

I don't usually use them / remember to use them, but I have heard some people say they can help some in Yahoo!

I set up a test for these very features here:

Title attributes test (http://www.platinax.co.uk/seo/lab/title-attributes/)

I need to update the pages to allow for a little more flexibility in the interpretation - but overall, you can check for the nonsense words in the required attribute and see whether it is picked up by your targeted search engine.

The nonsense words certainly do not appear in Google - though someone may wish to argue that an interpretation remains that they are useful for referencing of keywords, as is sometimes made of the description meta-tag.

Jill Whalen tested this a while ago and found no increase... I seriously doubt if by itself it has much clout but it is good style and aggregated it does not negatively impact so... I use them.
