Few areas of search marketing are as brutally competitive as the travel industry. In addition to throwing elbows against powerhouse aggregators like Orbitz and Expedia, SEMs working with travel sites have to jostle for position with affiliates, wholesalers, and often sellers of travel products themselves.
Today's SearchDay article, Search Engine Marketing For Travel-Related Sites (http://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/3425831), guest writer Shari Thurow reports on a panel at SES San Jose that discussed techniques and tactics for sharpening your search marketing chops to compete effectively in this aggressively competitive arena.

another solution for longterm success is to create a site with useful original content focused on a specific area <--- most travel sites do not do that and if you do it is way easier to build good link popularity into your site. tons of people create generic worldwide travel sites and fight way harder than they would have to if they focused on specific countries / regions / cities.

I agree that this is the best approach but unfortunately even this is being flooded with content.
>flooded with content
I think content is a very misused word.
When I think of content I think of something unique, compelling, readable, etc etc. I see very few areas flooded with content, there are a *lot* of areas out there crying out for good sites, travel is one of the most obvious.

There are a lot of articles on travel... true some are not as good as others... but the travel industry rates high in the free information category... people love writing about what they did last summer... posting pictures and passing along tips...
Hell there must be as many forums etc for travel as there is for the porn industry...

there are, but most the travel sites are not specifically focused...and do not have links from the local chamber of commerce and those sorts of sites.
