Hi,

It's been a few years since I was active in the search world. But I thought this might be useful to people (if this is old tell me to go back into my cave.)

Most people who want a complete list of backlinks from google use
link:theirsite.com

But that only gives a partial list.

Instead use
link¦theirsite.com

notice the difference is the special "broken pipe" instead of the colon. (if can't get your keyboard to make it then just copy and paste.)

Have fun.

When I try to this (link¦mysite.com) I get the same results as simply searching mysite.com. ie. This syntax tells you the sites that have my URL in their content.

Perhaps I am doing it wrong?

Regardless, the best method of checking backlinks is to use Yahoo! Site Explorer or another backlink monitoring tool. These usually limit ot 1000 backlinks.

Well best way to check links towards your site is yahoo site explorer and in google sitemap control panel area there you analyze the internal links and external links of your site.

The proper way to use the link operator at Google is like this:
link:domain.com
or
link:www.domain.com
etc.

When you put a space after the : then it becomes just a regular search. Using pipe or any other character also just causes a regular search.

Exactly right. Also, for better link: results at Google do it from from inside your WMT account.

Interesting, and thanks for this tip.

I've just used it on some very new (<1 month old) and older, established sites, and I get very different results. With the ¦ on the new sites I get a few links, and with a colon I get no results. Not sure what this means, but I'll start using both from now on!
