Google knows that advertisers bid much more on more general, correctly spelled search queries. The primary purpose of this new feature is to suggest more common and therefore more expensive search queries to users. This will essentially allow Google a "way around" exact match ppc ads for terms like "iPod shuffle leather carrying case" by suggesting "iPod case" which of course is a much more competitive and costly ppc term. To save time, users will just use the down arrow to pick the more common suggestion rather than typing in the entire search phrase they were planning to input. The primary problem with this is that not only will it increase PPC costs and Google advertising revenue, it will potentially skew the demographic inferences now possible based upon longer, more detailed queries and misspellings. In other words, whereas right now PPC advertertisers can differentiate the likelihood of a given search phrase to generate a sale (based upon historical data), now they won't know if the consumer actually planned to use that search phrase or whether they were lead in the more general direction by this new tool.
