Search engine marketing is the promotion of your service/business/website by making it more visible to possible clients/customers using search engines. As most online sales start with a web search - those that do this well are more likely to be found and get the sale.

Searh marketing covers a wide range of areas, but can be essentially grouped as follows -

1, SEO/search engine optimization - this can either be well by developing a webpages relevancy, content etc to help it gradually rank well in the 'natural' search listings for a particular keyword; or can be done by 'black hat' techniques that could bring quick results (both in terms of initial ranking and being banned by google etc .... :D )

2, PPC/pay-per-click - a marketing model where advertisers bid to show their advertisement on searches for a particular keyword or phrases, and only pay when someone actually clicks through from the search page to the advertisers website. this is an excellent and very cost-effective marketing model that can bring a guaranteed listing at the top of the search engines (at a cost!) - but requires quite a bit of research and testing to get right.

Search marketing should also be used in conjunction with the 'back end' development of your website/pages to make sure that when you get all this traffic it can be converted into the required sales/newsletter sign ups/brochure requests etc ....

Hope this helps

Alan

Also see our SEO 101 (http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=webmasters) for a pretty good primer on SEO and PPC.
