I know this is a basic question, but it's something that has always confused me. I thought that the default operation when entering more than one keyword was a boolean "and". Therfore, I would expect that if I entered the following keywords: xlk excel I would get the same results as if I entered: xlk +excel. However that does not seem to be the case. What is the error is my thinking?
Thanks,
Ken

Welcome, apple01.
Yeah, the default is "and" (actually, "and/or", weighted toward "and"). The "+" is actually *supposed* to force Google to only include pages that with term. So, yes, there are differences in the searches.

plus sign gives u extra search result for the extra word typed after +, if u type "and" result shows content related to "and"

You need to capitalize AND and OR. I find the minus sign very useful -word. No space between the sign and the word.

Why does it need to be capitalized? The AND and OR

When you capitalize the AND and OR (NOR and NOT etc) you turn the words into a boolean function.

take a look at here,

I'm pretty sure the plus sign (+) has several functions:
On example, "+hat" would find pages with only the word hat, and not hats or cap.
Another example, the plus sign would be taken to mean addition if used in "50 + 50".

I have used the negative sign pretty often. Lets say you want DOD but not the Dept of Defense. You could search DOD -Defense. No space in between the negative sign and the term.
