The computer boots and at the end of the process a popup appears:
Connect to Google.com
Enter User Name:
Password:********

How can I get rid of this annoyance?

You could have the browser set to open on start up and have a Google account... is the homepage set to Google? Do you have a Google account?

I have a Google account and Google is the home page. Running DSL to connect to the Internet with IE 6 and Win XP. To my knowledge the computer is not set to start the Internet after booting. How can this be checked?

Sounds to me like you have Gmail Notifier (http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/notifier_windows.html). You would need to uninstall it. Or you could just enjoy it!

Yes, I have Gmail Notifier installed. Perhaps and uninstall reinstall will solve the problem.
