we all know new sites are hard to rank and not good for link partners, but does this apply to sites like wordpress.com? if i add a subdomain like joesmoe.wordpress.com does google consider that a NEW site, or as a new page off OLD site, ie. wordpress?

this is very important to know as when getting links from companies it's best to get links from OLD websites

if you have answers, could you kindly provide some basis or proof or how you know it to be true

Hi Andrew:

That's a very good question. I've been operating under the assumption that wordpress.com is an old site and any new subdomains on that domain are still considered "old" sites - technically. I'm curious to know what others think since blogging is a major part of our company's SEO strategy.

Well, the reason I stayed away from this thread is:

could you kindly provide some basis or proof or how you know it to be true
In the world we live and work in that's a bit unrealistic. But I'll give it a shot anyway. ;-)

wordpress.com > old domain
example.wordpress.com > new subdomain

Subdomains are *usually* treated separately from the main domain. Assuming that's true, then links from the example sub would be treated as coming from a "new" domain. So, a new link from a new sub probably won't carry much, if any, weight.

I think a bigger issue here might be how the SEs view these freebie sites. They deal with multitudes of these sites set up expressly for the purpose of pointing links to money sites. In order to be effective the freebie site has to establish a certain level of trust, which would include its own healthy backlink profile.

No basis, no proof. Just opinion.
