I'd be obliged if someone could clarify the operation of the "All Regions" filter when you specify a location with the Ad Preview Tool.

To quote the AdWords blog post at http://adwords.blogspot.com/2007/07/improved-location-targeting-for-ad.html:

"Let's say you want to know what happens when someone in Toronto, Canada searches www.google.ca for "flowers". When you enter those parameters into the Ad Preview Tool, we'll show you the exact search results page you would see if you were actually in Toronto."

So given that different ads will appear in different positions depending on where the search is carried out, what are you getting when you set location to "All Regions"?

Thnx in anticipation.

I think you will be seeing a mixture of national and local results.

For example, if you type in "Honda", you will see Honda's national advertising campaign which would presumably be targeted to "all regions", but you will also see a number of results from local dealerships in your area (you can see they are using local targeting because your locale might be visible underneath their copy, i.e. it says 'chicago' or 'tampa').

Therefore, I think the default setting for "all regions" will be your local area, and any advertisers who choose to target "all regions" will obviously be visible.

Hi Michelle,

Thnx for your reply, but I'm not sure that's right.

For example, I live in New Zealand, so I can't be served any 'local' results when I select USA - All Regions.

Geo-targeted regional ads compete with national advertisers in each respective regional market . . . that's why the results you get are often different region to region.

If results in each regional sub-market can be different, how can you have one set of results for the overall country market?

Unless . . . those All Regions results are what are shown to users searching from outside the country?

In which case, wouldn't they be better labelled 'Outside Country' or 'International Users'?

OH OK, i see what you mean, then I would assume you only see National results.

You could always double check this by reading the copy and seeing if any of it is localised, in addition to examining whether any of the Ad's have a 5th line which determines where the Ad is being served, i.e. "Chicago".

I can't imagine what other way would be more fair.

so you mean you could choose weather it would be international or local?
