Will participation in AdWords or AdSense affect my listing in Google's free search results?

The short answer is no. But if you have a geat site, traffic from adwords might be a way to jumpstart some natural link growth, which would of course affect your listing. And it is also possible that adsense could affect you, in a negative way, if you get tagged as MFA. So the long answe is yes ;-)
