Hi all!
I'm a student from Brazil and I'm graduating this year in advertising, making my final exam dissertation about Google.
I tried some times to make contact with a teacher from the Washington University to get some orientation, but I got no answers. I believe that he don't guide foreign students
I'm facing some problems because our bibliography for SE subjects is extremely poor, and I can't afford english books because it comes to Brazil REALLY expensive.
I got some Brazilian books to make the basic part of my dissertation, but the essential part, I will research in SE websites (like SEWatch).
I divided the dissertation in these subjects:
1 - Something about Internet and Information Serch Engines history. The importance of SE to the Internet Information Organization.
2 - Why choosing Internet to increase your business power?
3 - What are search engines and how they works (and worked)?
4 - Internet Advertising X SE Marketing
5 - Why Google?
6 - How Google engine works?
7 - How to optimize your website to increase your positioning results in Google search? Building your SE Marketing strategy.
8 - Case Studies.
Do you guys (SE Gurus) suggests me to include/remove/modify any subject?
Do you know any specific information sources for these (or other) subjects?
Thanks for your help and sorry about my english ;)

You could add a section about the future of the Search Engine market -- Yahoo and MSN are both turning on the heat, and Google is obviously in the process of taking some major steps to fight for its leadership status. If you browse through any Search Engine forums, you will find plenty of material about the changes afoot at the major SE's
Good luck with your dissertation!

Welcome to the forums, asebba - and your English is just fine!
That's a lot to tackle all at once, but I'll try to give just a couple of ideas and hopefully other members will come along with more.
1 - Something about Internet and Information Serch Engines history. The importance of SE to the Internet Information Organization.
For that you might want to start with the history of the internet, who "invented" it and what it was first used for.
2 - Why choosing Internet to increase your business power?
The answer to that would be rooted in the nature of the internet itself. It's online 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and sites are available all around the world. That broadens the marketing reach of a company beyond the usual limited areas and gives yet another medium to reach potential customers or clients beyond traditional advertising.
3 - What are search engines and how they works (and worked)?
For search engines, their purpose is to index the contents of the web and "organize" so that when making queries searchers can find what they're looking for. Way oversimplified and incomplete, but the beginning is crawling, then adding to the index - and then returning results to users.
Again, you might start with the beginnings and early history of search engines - and there are some good documents online explaining how search engines work in simple terms
4 - Internet Advertising X SE Marketing
I'll pass on this one. :)
5 - Why Google?
For organic, or "regular" search, the answer is simply that Google is the most used search engine and reaches the greatest number of people. For reasons why to advertise with Google, it's for the same reason - and a good place to start is with their Adwords page
Google Advertising (http://services.google.com/ads_inquiry/en)
You'll find the links on the left there helpful
6 - How Google engine works?
There is a lot of information right on their site, including a section on how Google works - which is based on Page Rank.
About Google (http://www.google.com/about.html)
7 - How to optimize your website to increase your positioning results in Google search? Building your SE Marketing strategy.
That would have to be a *very* long answer, beyond the scope of this post.
And really, those are two different questions. Building a Search Engine Marketing Strategy can include Optimizing for organic (regular) search, developing inbound links, getting directory listings, PPC advertising and Pay for Inclusion (not Google, but Yahoo has that).
Those will both take very long answers.
8 - Case Studies.
There are a few listed in the Google Advertising section - just for a start.
Hope this helps as a brief start - and hopefully some detailed replies will be added.

When you work out the answer to number 6 post it here... we would all like the definitive answer to that one: How Google works!
It is an impressive undertaking.

Actually I was thinking in research about the most important google ranking mechanisms to help in the website prositioning strategy. I really don't know how deep can I reach , but I need at least explain the basic Google positioning rules to build an effective SE marketing. I will do my best, but if am I'm saying some bull****, please warn me, I don't have too much time to lose. My graduation is in december.
Thank you for your attention ;)

It's an excelent opportunity to know Brazil. I live in the most beautiful state of Brazil: Ceará - Fortaleza. We have the brazilian most beautiful beaches. One of them is rated in the top 10 beaches in the world.
When everything is ok, I will post the invitation here ;)

Did you know Brazil accounts for 75% of South American online spending...

That is a very interesting fact, AussieWebmaster. One would have expected it to be more like Brazil and Argnetina do 40-45% each and the rest of SA accounts for the remaining 10-20%. But I guess devaluations in the Argentinian currency and their market slumps have caused real values of online transactions to fall drastically.
