There is a link in the left-hand navigation part of this very site labeled "Search 101." I'd highly recommend starting there and reading all the articles listed. Each one will have its own links to more detailed information on everything you could possibly want to know about SEO. But if you get stuck on a concept or have specific questions, don't hesitate to ask. But personally I leave the instructional article writing to the pro's. ;)

SEO is the active practice of optimizing a web site by improving internal and external aspects in order to increase the traffic the site receives from search engines. Firms that practice SEO can vary; some have a highly specialized focus, while others take a more broad and general approach. Optimizing a web site for search engines can require looking at so many unique elements that many practitioners of SEO (SEOs) consider themselves to be in the broad field of website optimization (since so many of those elements intertwine).

Hey, I think you new here, anyway ..
Search engine optimization is everything that can be done to make a search engine send more traffic to a web site.
Usually this means defining keywords or key phrases and trying to have your web site listed first (or at least near first) for those key terms.
Search engine optimization is usually divided into two categories of tasks:
• On-page optimization
• Off-page optimization
On-page optimization is designing your web pages to achieve the best ratings from the search engines.
On-page optimization activites include:
• Writing keyword-rich text
• Applying good ALT tags to images
• Making sure that the web page can be properly "spidered" by all of the search engines
• Off-page optimization consists of creating inbound links to your web page.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume
and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via search results. SEO can target contextual search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. SEO is marketing by understanding how search algorithms work and what human visitors might search for, to help match those visitors with sites offering what they are interested in finding. Some SEO efforts may involve optimizing a site's coding, presentation, and structure, without making very noticeable changes to human visitors, such as incorporating a clear hierarchical structure to a site, and avoiding or fixing problems that might keep search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other, more noticeable efforts, involve including unique content on pages that can be easily indexed and extracted from those pages by search engines while also appealing to human visitors.

If you want some information on the topic you can have a look at this site: (URL removed - and subsequent promotional language removed)

The definition of organic SEO currently varies as it an emerging term. The common core to the term’s meaning is that it describes techniques for optimising a website’s position in search engine results pages that do not involve paid keyword specific advertising. Often this basic negative definition is expanded to also exclude less wholesome SEO techniques such as “link spamming”, the provision of pages designed soley for search engine robots, heavily loading pages with lists of keywords the use of link farms etc.

The types of technique that are covered by the term organic SEO include optimised copy writing to ensure that targeted keywords are present at a high density, ensuring that anchor text, headings, titles and other high value regions of a page are keyword rich. (removed two paragraphs of promotional-type content)

People think that organic SEO is so simple you don’t have to put a lot of efforts into it. Well wrong!

It is much much harder then just using PPC. Comparing to Pay Per Click SEO is a real mastery.

Organic SEO is just as much work as any other type of SEO. It’s just a little different method of creating a site optimized for search ranking, without having to implement any new technologies or spend a lot of time submitting your site to different primary and secondary search engines. And really, the distinction here is a very general one.

Usually people are satisfied with “just plain SEO,” which means a a certain combination of organic and fee-based SEO. It’s best if you just think of SEO as just SEO; then you don’t have to worry about distinctions that aren’t really important in optimizing your web site.

There are few definitions of organic SEO, depending on whom you talk to. Some SEO experts think it’s all about optimizing the content pages of your web site with the purpose catching the attention of the search engine crawlers and spiders that periodically index your site.

There is two techniques for seo one in white hat SEO technique and another one is black hat technique. The white hat technique is called organic SEO?
No. Hat colors simply refer to certain techniques and the risks taken to achieve rankings in the search engines' organic results.

Organic Results Non-paid listings that are algorithmically returned by search engines for given search terms.

Actually, I don't think there is such a thing as "organic" SEO; if so, there has to be an opposing SEO. Inorganic SEO, anyone?

In my narrow little world, all SEO is organic because search engine optimization is meant to influence the organic results. Then, again just focusing on the search engine results page, we have the paid or "inorganic" listings, the province of the pay-per-click (PPC) specialists.

Both SEO and PPC would fall under the general heading of Search Engine Marketing (SEM).

Search Engine Optimization is a process of achieving top Ranking in a search engine for a particular search term. Search term is nothing but what people are most likely to type in a search engine when there are looking for something that a website can offer. SEO targets these search terms and optimize it so that they are ranked high.
The first step in SEO is to choose the most appropriate keyword for your website.
SEO has on page and off page
On page deals with your keywords, site layout and its design so that it is search engine friendly.
Off page seo is done after your website has gone live. Through Off page seo you optimise your site so that it can get indexed in the top position in a particular search engine.
Off Page SEO is all about link popularity. It uses techniques such as Social Book Marking, Direct Submission, Article Submission, PPC, Blog and Forum commenting through which you can build some good quality one way links. The key here is the better and authentic links you have the higher your page rank will be and the more traffic you get.

Organic search engine optimization (SEO) refers to manual page optimization as opposed to automatic submittal and page alteration, which is the most common. SEO is a web-based tool that allows a website to be listed on various search engines, such as Google and Yahoo. The higher up a site is listed, the more web traffic it will have and, therefore, the more success the business is likely to have. For instance, a company listed on Google's first page is likely to have a lot more traffic than a company listed on the fourth or fifth page.
