View Full Version : Page Rank - eh?
Hi
My page rank has just gone from 0 to 4 - I've been up and trading for about 6 months, so I suppose this is my first proper ranking.
I don't really understand how I've got as high as PR4 - I've got 3 inbound links buried deep in other PR4 sites: one reciprocal link relevant to my business, one reciprocal link with a local business site and one from an irrelevant either way site.
I suppose 4 doesn't amount to a hill of beans, but as a small obscure single handed business I'm quite pleased. Certainly none of my bigger and longer established competitors are outranking me.
So am I right in thinking that PR is nothing to do with my optimisation? But if my site is as equally well optimised as a competitor's, will a higher PR mean I'm more likely to appear above them in organic google searches? And if I'm better optimised and higher PR then I'm starting to look in a good position to get more work??

check yahoo site explorer for a better idea of inbound links... or did you get it from webmaster central?
Found them on Google Webmaster Tools (google itself shows no links with the link: search prefix)

Sure it does.
If you are providing unique and relevant information, then you are helping build out the indexes. People too often confuse being good at something or doing something well, with "cheating the system".
That's what makes SEO so easy for some people and so difficult for others. If you are trying to crack the secret code and get results based up on that rather than trying to just be honest with your content, you will find it really tough later on, when algorithms change.
I have always found it better to bolster or create new content than trying to spend all of my time finding out why someone with 8.42% of their page saturation and someone with 8.01% saturation are higher than my page with an 8.20% saturation, even when I have a higher PR than them.... I also sleep better at night.

Not necessarily, this will also depend heavily on the optimization of your inbound links.
>But does SEO affect PR?
PR is related only to links.

Well, the idea behind creating unique content is 1) attract links and 2) you stand out.
Just because you create something unique doesn't mean Google is going to rank you or give you PR. You can't say "I exist, therefore I matter". Descartes was a liar and charlatan. Lots of people during his time existed, thought, and their lives mattered not. So it is here. "unique" content is still relative.
But if you play the game of percentage this and percentage that - and comparing yourself with your competitors, you're bound to lose. That goes with anything. You can't be fretting over what the other guy is doing - you forget what you need to do. What did Nobutada say to Tom Cruise? "Too many mind" - that's what happens.

Yeah, but any chance to take a shot at Tom Cruise is worth something...albeit, he is an easy target.
